The Big Break-up

A number of interesting things happen along the shores of the bay when the ice begins to lose its hold. The differences in the phenomena, depending on your location, can be fascinating.

A few miles south along the bay, Baloo and I walked past a huge mound of ice cubes that had been pushed up on the sand. You can see that there is still ice waiting to be pummeled and piled even higher.

Yet, just a few hundred yards north of the ice cubes there were these really big slabs of ice that had been heaved up on the beach. For a sense of scale, the little, tiny, dark dots in the middle of the picture are ducks just a short way off shore.

These stacks of ice slabs are quite dramatic.

They have a lovely, blueish tint and almost seem to glow from within, even on a cloudy day.

Pretty awesome.
