I've been busy with family stuff again and have fallen way behind in ... well, just about everything.
Here's a little chipping sparrow singing its heart out at the tip of a small spruce tree. It made me smile and I hope gives you a grin, too. :)
Many sparrows head farther north in the summer to nest, but these cuties stick around pretty nearly all year. Some will head south for the winter, but some are hardy souls that brave the cold and snow.
Sparrows might be plain brown birds to some people, but I find them quite delightful, with markings and habits that make them anything but plain.

Yay ! You're back !! I've just started seeing chipping sparrows under my feeders for the first time since June. Around here, they mean that, like it or not, fall is almost upon us.
Hugs to ya, hope yer okay, from BetsyLee
Thank you for the welcome back to the blog! The blackbird contingent has arrived here. That's a sure sign of fall's imminent arrival. Starlings, grackles and red-wing blackbirds have descended upon the backyard feeders. :)
Hugs right back to you!
At this time of season, the blackbirds, grackles, and starlings have left my yard, and are moving about in big flocks around the countryside. They're around, but at least not gobbling the bird seeds! When I start hearing their huge flocks, and seeing them by the hundreds in the trees, then it's time for corduroy jackets, apples, and peanut butter crackers. I look forward to it !
Hugs to ya, have a great day from BetsyLee
I had a big flock land in my back yard. This batch has moved along now. My favorite thing about the hoards descending was watching the baby red-winged blackbirds. The males' red epaulets and the females' markings were just becoming really visible and they all had very short little tails. They were so cute.
Hugs back atcha! :)
Delightful to have you back, a d also a sparrow fan. His eye is on them, after all.
We're having hummingbirds swooping round the backyard along w a few different finches.. Quite enjoying the show.

Thanks for the reentry welcome, TAP. That's a lovely way to think of sparrows - it's going to make me smile every time I see one now. :)
I always think of the hummingbird wars as aerial jousting matches. They have their long beaks for lances and they're so fierce. And oh, the chattering!
Spot on with the hummer description! We started changing their food more often and ohmyland, it's paying off. And by "we" I mean my husband! TAP
I need to make another batch of hummer sauce - they're going through it at an amazing rate with the addition of babies and commuters. (Side note - I once had someone go nuts on me thinking that "hummer sauce" meant that I made some kind of sauce out of hummingbirds. I'm not kidding. Needless to say, they were terribly relieved when I explained what I meant!)
