Breeding Bunny Burrow

There will soon be baby bunnies racing around the neighborhood.

Piper and I encountered this sweet cottontail gathering dry grasses to line her nest.

Piper wasn't the only one entranced by her efforts. We watched for a long time and Madame Cottontail finally hopped off into the underbrush to burrow in for the baby bunny birth.

I've come across bunny nests, seen lots of little ones out and about the yard. I've never seen a rabbit with a mouth full of nesting materials. Squirrels, not rabbits.

I've only seen a nest lined with fur and filled with tiny bunnies, but I'm sure there was grass lining under the furry part. Cool. What wonderful things you can see if you keep your eyes open !

Piper found a bunny nest earlier this spring. Happily, she was pretty gentle and all the babies survived. :)

I think they take advantage of the springtime shedding to add extra warmth and furry fluff to their nest, but there's definitely grass mixed in with the insulation. :) Hugs right back!
