Windy, Wintry Wonders

It's been extremely cold, windy and snowy around here lately (just about everywhere else, too!).

My sister feeds the birds in the back of the house and along the banister of the front porch. The wind blew so hard all the mealworms and peanuts blew off the rail, but this enterprising little nuthatch found a tasty mealworm to fly off with.

When it's this cold, the squirrels usually stay curled up in their nests, but one intrepid black squirrel ventured out for some sunflower seeds. It looks really cold, doesn't it?

The wind and chill caused frost to rim birds' eyes, making them look like they were wearing white mascara.

But they're absolutely beautiful sheltering in the snow covered cedar. We're looking at Christmas card scenes every day!

Love the pics of our friends the birds! I never knew birds could get frost rimmed eyes! Brr! I really like the pic that shows the birds sheltering in the cedar. I want a cedar for my yard so little birds can get out of the wind in it. The wind and snow are blowing right now, so my cedar is just a dream for the future. Sigh.

that cardinal looks like a poof ball with the wind blowing his feathers about.

Yeah, it is so cold I don't even want to go out. My feeders need filling I have to go out...........

I have a row of arborvitae with a cluster of pine at each end that the previous owners planted over 20 years ago. Nice place for the birds to escape the hawk that likes to canvas my yard. One landed on the top of my shepherd's hook. That was a sight.

Sheila, how I wish I had a row of arborvitae and pine ! I used to have two 80 tall Norway Spruce on the north side of my yard, and they caught the wind, plus loads of birds sheltered in them when they needed to. Now that they're gone, and the highway dept cut down all the brush across the road from us, there is no wind break or shelter from hawks. Poor birdies, I didn't get out soon enough after Christmas to pick up some discarded trees to set up close to the feeders. I have to do better next year !

I used to have tons of bluejays, but the neighbor behind me cut down all their fence trees/ shrubs and flowers and I lost most of them visiting my yard so much.

I love the birds, too. I am hoping that my birds are finding food at my neighbors' nearby. They won't get the gourmet variety they usually got at my house, but I hope they've been getting some help in this weather. I put netting around the arbor vitae, since the deer eat them otherwise, but they still have the upper branches and all the spruce trees and shrubbery around the yard to get relief from the wind.

The squirrels are messing with the base of my arborvitae row to make nesting and the rabbits are eating a lot of the base too.

Sheila, the rabbits girdled my burning bushes and juneberry last year. I expect they've chewed up pretty much everything else they can reach, especially since I haven't been handing out any corn or rabbit food this year. I hadn't thought of that! Sigh. We'll see what's left when spring comes. LOL!
