Feeling Fuzzy

Piper takes particular interest in furry friends. She goes on point for rabbits and squirrels and would love to follow them on a merry chase. I walk along beside her as she carefully stalks them, step by cautious step.

Every now and then, they'll stay still long enough for me to snap a photo before they duck for cover or perch high enough in a tree to foil a curious canine.

The rabbit looked particularly fuzzy, since it's shedding its winter coat and putting on sleeker wear for the warmer months ahead. Piper also sniffed out a couple of bunny nests lined with shed fur to keep the little buns warm.

This black squirrel plowed through a spider's web on its dash for safety and got sticky silk and pine needles stuck to its head along the way. The pine needle just above its eye looks like an angry squirrel eyebrow.

I thought we might have had enough feathers, flowers and fungus for a few days, so it seemed appropriate to give fur a turn. :)

Black squirrel !? Do they get in the bird feeders like regular grey squirrels? We have only grey ones around here. And I so wish we had a bunny or two in our yard. Who doesn't love a bunny ? Thanks for the pics !

Yes, BetsyLee, it's a black squirrel youngster. I have my feeders pretty well baffled, so it's rare for a squirrel to get on one these days, but I did have a desperate mom black squirrel make it onto a feeder last week. She didn't do it again (at least not that I saw), but I was amazed she made it up past the baffle the first time. You probably already know this, but black squirrels are just gray squirrels in more formal coats. :)
Hugs right back to you!

Yeah, I know black squirrels are just fancy grey squirrels, but they're still fun to see. There are reddish grey squirrels called fox squirrels which are also supposed to be fancy grey squirrels. We saw one of those at park - it was sitting at a table, staring right at us, giving us the 'eye' for several minutes. Wonder what it was thinking? MInd you, it was 'reddish', not really red. They are also huskier than the regular greys.

I admit to having a love/hate relationship with the Fuzzies. On the one hand, they're SO Cute and well, fuzzy. On the other, they love to chew up my stuff! The gluttonous squirrels don't stop at the seeds, they destroy the feeders. And the buns gnaw on the tender shoots that we're destined to become delicious vegetables or colorful blooms. I don't mind sharing, but their poor social habits are really putting a damper on things. But I love em anyway -- the place just wouldn't be the same without The Fuzzies.

Thanks for sharing your adventures! I look forward to them
